Free Printable Chess Worksheets for Kids (PDF, with Answers)
Make free printable chess worksheets in a minute. Choose puzzle themes such as mate in 1, mate in 2, forks, pins or back-rank mates, set the difficulty by puzzle rating from 400 (beginners) to 3000, or use the exercises from our chess lessons. Each page holds 6, 8 or 12 diagrams with the side to move under every board, and a worksheet can have up to 10 pages.
Worksheets print on US Letter or A4 paper, or save as a PDF from your browser's print dialog. Add a title, a class name, a date and a line for the student's name, choose board coordinates and answer lines, and include an answer key page with the full solution to every puzzle. The worksheet code keeps the same puzzles, so you can print the same sheet again next year.
Each sheet can carry a QR code to its student version: students scan it, or open a link you share, and solve the same puzzles online on an interactive board. The puzzles come from the free Lichess puzzle database (CC0), so you can copy them for class, chess club or home. For ready-made sets, see the chess puzzles for kids and the Thanksgiving and Christmas puzzle pages.
Frequently asked questions
Are these chess worksheets free?
Yes. The worksheet generator, the PDFs you save and the answer keys are all free, and you don't need an account. Print as many sheets as you like for your students or your own children.
What ages are the worksheets for?
Any age that knows how the pieces move. For children of about 6 to 8 who have just learned, pick mate in 1 with a rating of 400 to 800. Kids of 9 to 12 and club beginners can try forks, pins and mate in 2 at 800 to 1400, and stronger players can raise the rating range up to 3000.
Do the worksheets come with an answer key?
Yes. With the answer key option on, the last page lists the solution to every puzzle in chess notation, with the puzzle's rating. Turn the option off to print copies for students without the answers.
How many puzzles are on each worksheet?
You choose 6, 8 or 12 puzzles per page and 1 to 10 pages, so a worksheet has between 6 and 120 puzzles. Six per page gives the biggest diagrams for young children; twelve per page suits older students and homework packs.
How do I print a worksheet or save it as a PDF?
Pick US Letter or A4, then press Download PDF and choose Save as PDF as the destination in the print dialog, or press Print to send it straight to your printer. Turn off the browser's headers and footers for the cleanest pages.
Can I use the worksheets in my classroom or chess club?
Yes, they are made for teachers, coaches and parents. Add your class name and date, share the worksheet link so colleagues can print the same sheet, and give students the QR code or student link to solve the puzzles online. The puzzles are public domain (CC0), so you can copy and hand them out freely.
