Sicilian Defense: Dragon Variation
ECO B70, B72 · 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 g6
The Dragon Variation, 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6, fianchettoes Black's bishop on the long diagonal. The name comes from the shape of Black's pawn chain, which resembles the constellation Draco. It leads to some of the sharpest positions in chess.
Plans for White
The Yugoslav Attack (6.Be3 Bg7 7.f3 O-O 8.Qd2 Nc6 and 9.Bc4 or 9.O-O-O) is the critical test: White castles queenside, trades the Dragon bishop with Bh6, and opens the h-file with h4-h5 to mate on h7. Quieter options include the Classical 6.Be2 and the Levenfish 6.f4.
Plans for Black
Black races on the queenside with ...Rc8, ...Ne5-c4, ...Qa5, ...b5 and the thematic exchange sacrifice ...Rxc3, which shatters White's king position. The g7 bishop is Black's best piece and should be kept or traded only for real gain.
Typical pawn structures
Black's pawns on d6, e7, f7, g6 and h7 with a fianchettoed bishop; White's on e4 and f3 with a half-open d-file. Opposite-side castling races are the norm.
Who it suits
Tactical players who love attacking races and are willing to study concrete lines.
Common traps
Once White trades the g7 bishop and opens the h-file, mating patterns on h7 and h8 appear fast. For White, ignoring ...Rxc3 ideas or leaving the c4 bishop loose can cost the game.
