Sicilian Defense: Accelerated Dragon

ECO B32 · 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 g6

The Accelerated Dragon, 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 g6, fianchettoes before playing ...d6. The point is that Black can later play ...d5 in one move, and that the dangerous Yugoslav Attack is less effective.

Plans for White

White's main try is the Maróczy Bind with 5.c4, clamping down on d5 with pawns on c4 and e4 and aiming for a long-term space advantage. The classical 5.Nc3 Bg7 6.Be3 Nf6 7.Bc4 keeps more tactical play.

Plans for Black

Black develops with ...Bg7, ...Nf6, ...O-O and ...d6, and looks for ...d5 or ...b5 breaks to free the position. Against the Maróczy, piece exchanges reduce White's space advantage, and the ...a5-a4 or ...f5 ideas create counterplay.

Typical pawn structures

The Maróczy Bind (White pawns c4 and e4) against Black's flexible d6/e7 setup is the main structure; without c4, Black often achieves ...d5 and equality.

Who it suits

Players who like the Dragon's piece activity with less risk, and who are patient in slightly cramped positions.

Common traps

If White leaves pieces loose on c3, d4 or c4, tactics with ...Nxe4 or ...Nxd4 followed by ...Nxe4 along the long diagonal can win material. Black must also avoid ...d6 too early, which allows the Yugoslav setup.
