Scotch Game
ECO C44, C45 · 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4
The Scotch Game, 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4, opens the center immediately. After 3...exd4 4.Nxd4 White has a pawn on e4 against nothing in the center, free development and a clear, direct game. Garry Kasparov revived it as a serious weapon in the 1990s.
Plans for White
White develops quickly with Nc3, Be3, Bd3 or Be2 and castles, using the space given by the e4 pawn. In the main line with 4...Nf6 5.Nxc6 bxc6 6.e5, White gains space and tries to show that Black's broken queenside pawns are a long-term weakness.
Plans for Black
Black challenges the d4 knight with 4...Bc5 or counterattacks e4 with 4...Nf6. Typical plans are rapid development, ...d5 to free the position, and pressure on White's e4 or e5 pawn. In the Scotch Gambit (4.Bc4) Black can return material to complete development.
Typical pawn structures
The d-pawn exchange leaves an open d-file and a half-open e-file. Many lines give Black doubled c-pawns after Nxc6 bxc6, compensated by the bishop pair or open b-file.
Who it suits
Players who prefer open positions with clear plans over the long theoretical maneuvering of the Ruy Lopez.
Common traps
In the Scotch Gambit, Black must not try to keep every pawn: after 4.Bc4 Bc5 5.c3, grabbing with 5...dxc3? lets White develop with tempo and attack f7. White, for his part, must watch e4 after 4...Nf6 and avoid leaving it under-defended.
