Ruy Lopez
ECO C60 · 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5
The Ruy Lopez, also called the Spanish Opening, arises after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5. White attacks the knight that defends e5, building long-term pressure rather than an immediate threat. It has been a mainstay of world championship play for well over a century.
Plans for White
White castles, plays Re1, c3 and d4 to build a broad center, and often reroutes the queen's knight via d2-f1-g3 toward the kingside. The light-squared bishop usually retreats to a4, b3 and finally c2, where it eyes Black's king. Exchanging on c6 (the Exchange Variation) trades the bishop for a better pawn structure.
Plans for Black
The main line is 3...a6, the Morphy Defense, putting the question to the bishop. Black then plays ...Nf6, ...Be7, ...b5 and ...d6 or ...O-O, keeping the e5 strongpoint. Alternatives include the solid Berlin Defense (3...Nf6), the aggressive Schliemann (3...f5) and the Marshall Attack gambit with ...d5.
Typical pawn structures
Closed lines keep pawns on e4/d4 against e5/d6, giving a slow maneuvering battle where White plays on the kingside and Black on the queenside with ...c5 and ...Na5. The Exchange Variation gives White a healthy 4-vs-3 kingside majority against Black's doubled c-pawns and bishop pair.
Who it suits
Players who enjoy rich strategic middlegames, long plans and gradual pressure. It rewards understanding over memorization, though the main lines are deep.
Common traps
Noah's Ark trap: after 3...a6 4.Ba4 d6 5.d4 b5 6.Bb3 Nxd4 7.Nxd4 exd4 8.Qxd4? c5! and ...c4 traps White's bishop on b3. Note that 3.Bb5 does not yet threaten e5: after 3...a6 4.Bxc6 dxc6 5.Nxe5? Black regains the pawn with 5...Qd4.
