Pterodactyl Defense

ECO A42 · 1. Nf3 c5 2. c4 g6 3. d4 Bg7 4. e4 Qa5+ 5. Nc3 d6

The Pterodactyl Defense is a family of lines built around ...g6, ...Bg7, ...c5 and an early ...Qa5, putting pressure on White's queenside and the long diagonal. It can be played against both 1.e4 and 1.d4.

Plans for White

White develops normally, often with Nc3, Nf3, d4 and Be2 or Bd3, and tries to exploit the early queen move by gaining time against it. Castling quickly and keeping c3 protected are good practical rules.

Plans for Black

Black uses the bishop on g7 and queen on a5 to target c3 and the dark squares, often exchanging on d4 to open the long diagonal. Quick ...Nc6 and ...Nf6 complete the setup.

Typical pawn structures

Fianchetto setups with Black's c-pawn exchanged for White's d-pawn are common, similar to an Accelerated Dragon.

Who it suits

Players who enjoy offbeat, tricky systems and dark-square strategy.

Common traps

The queen on a5 can be exposed to tempo-gaining moves like Bd2 and Nb5, and to discovered attacks when the c3 knight moves. Black must keep track of where the queen can retreat.
