Polish Opening

ECO A00 · 1. b4

The Polish Opening, also called the Sokolsky or Orangutan, 1.b4, grabs queenside space and prepares Bb2 to pressure the long diagonal. It is unusual but playable, and it often takes opponents out of their opening knowledge immediately.

Plans for White

White uses the b-pawn for space, puts the bishop on b2 to attack e5, and continues with a3, e3, Nf3 and c4. If Black takes the b-pawn, White gains time and open lines.

Plans for Black

Black often attacks the b4 pawn with ...e5 and ...Bxb4, pressuring the loose pawn while taking the center, or plays ...d5, ...Nf6 and ...e6 for a solid setup. Another option is ...a5 to challenge the pawn at once.

Typical pawn structures

Queenside space for White against central pawns for Black; the b4 pawn is both an asset and a target.

Who it suits

Surprise-weapon players who like unusual positions and long-diagonal play.

Common traps

The b4 pawn is loose; White must not lose it for nothing, and should watch tactics with ...Bxb4 and ...e4 that hit the f3 knight while the b-pawn is unprotected.
