Petrov's Defense: Stafford Gambit
ECO C42 · 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Nxe5 Nc6
The Stafford Gambit, 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 Nc6, gives up a pawn in Petrov's Defense to set traps. It became very popular in online blitz thanks to chess streamers, but it is unsound against accurate play.
Plans for White
After 4.Nxc6 dxc6 White should play calmly with 5.d3 and Be2, or 5.Nc3, castle, and keep the extra pawn. The f2 square and the e4 pawn need careful protection.
Plans for Black
Black develops quickly with ...Bc5, ...Ng4 or ...Nxe4, ...Qd4 and ...h5 ideas, aiming at f2 and the white king.
Typical pawn structures
Black has doubled c-pawns but open lines for the queen and bishops.
Who it suits
Blitz players who like traps; not recommended for long games.
Common traps
The best-known trap: 5.d3 Bc5 6.Bg5? Nxe4! 7.Bxd8?? Bxf2+ 8.Ke2 Bg4#. White should avoid early Bg5 and protect f2.
