Latvian Gambit
ECO C40 · 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 f5
The Latvian Gambit, 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f5, is one of the most aggressive and risky defenses in chess. Black counterattacks immediately on the kingside at the cost of weakening the king.
Plans for White
The main line 3.Nxe5 takes control: White aims to exploit the weakened e8-h5 diagonal and the open center. 3.Bc4 is a sharp alternative that targets g8 and f7.
Plans for Black
Black wants to grab the initiative with ...Qf6, ...fxe4 and quick piece play, hoping White misplays the complications. In practice the Latvian scores better than its reputation in fast games, but it requires precise knowledge of the main lines.
Typical pawn structures
Unbalanced from move two; Black's f-pawn exchange often opens the f-file for Black's rook, while White gets the e-file and better central control.
Who it suits
Daring players in fast games. Objectively dubious, so less suited to serious long games.
Common traps
Both sides face queen checks on h5 and e2. Black's king often gets caught in the center if Black overreaches.
