King's Gambit Declined

ECO C30 · 1. e4 e5 2. f4

King's Gambit Declined covers Black's refusals of 2.f4, especially 2...Bc5 (Classical) and the Falkbeer Countergambit 2...d5. Black avoids the sharpest lines and develops with tempo.

Plans for White

White plays Nf3, c3 and d4 to build a center and blunt the bishop on c5, often delaying castling because the bishop controls g1. The f-file and the half-open center still give White attacking chances.

Plans for Black

Black uses the bishop on c5 to stop White from castling kingside and prepares ...d6, ...Nf6 and ...Nc6, keeping the e5 pawn as long as it is useful. In the Falkbeer Countergambit (2...d5) Black strikes in the center at once and often sacrifices the e-pawn for activity.

Typical pawn structures

Central tension around e5 and f4; White's king often stays in the center for a while.

Who it suits

Black players who want to avoid heavy King's Gambit Accepted theory while keeping an active, sound game with natural piece development.

Common traps

After 2...Bc5 White must not play 3.fxe5?? because of 3...Qh4+ and ...Qxe4+, winning the h1 rook.
