King's Gambit Accepted

ECO C33 · 1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4

King's Gambit Accepted covers all lines after 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4. Black takes the pawn, and the fight revolves around whether White can regain it or get enough attack for it.

Plans for White

With 3.Nf3 White stops ...Qh4+ and prepares d4 and Bc4. The Kieseritzky (h4 and Ne5) and Muzio (castling while leaving a knight en prise) gambits are the classic attacking lines. The Bishop's Gambit (3.Bc4) allows ...Qh4+ but gains development.

Plans for Black

Black can defend the f4 pawn with ...g5 (Classical), play the solid Fischer Defense (3...d6) or the Modern (3...d5) to return the pawn for free play.

Typical pawn structures

Black's pawns on f4 and g5 form a kingside wedge; White's pawns on d4 and e4 give central control and the f-file is half-open for White.

Who it suits

Tactical players willing to study sharp gambit lines on either side.

Common traps

Many games end with mating attacks on f7; equally, White's king on e1 or f1 is vulnerable to queen checks. Know the main Kieseritzky and Muzio ideas before playing them.
