Four Knights Game

ECO C47 · 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 Nf6

The Four Knights Game, 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6, is the purest form of development: both sides bring out their knights before anything else. Long considered dull, it remains sound and has several sharp branches.

Plans for White

The Spanish Four Knights (4.Bb5) and the Scotch Four Knights (4.d4) are the main tries. White aims for a small lead in development and pressure on e5, often with d3, Bg5 and Nd5 ideas.

Plans for Black

Black can mirror White's play, or choose the Rubinstein counterattack 4.Bb5 Nd4!, which tries to seize the initiative. Natural development and a timely ...d5 usually give Black a comfortable game.

Typical pawn structures

Symmetrical e4/e5 structures dominate; exchanges on c6 or d4 can give doubled pawns. Pins with Bg5 and ...Bg4 are recurring themes.

Who it suits

Beginners learning sound opening principles and practical players who want a clear, safe position.

Common traps

The Halloween Gambit (4.Nxe5?!) offers a knight for a big center; it is unsound, but Black must play precisely to keep the extra piece. In the symmetrical lines, both sides must watch for the Nd5 and Bg5 pin combination on f6.
