Colle System
ECO A40 · 1. d4 g6 2. Nf3 Bg7 3. e3 c5 4. Bd3
The Colle System is a setup for White with d4, e3, Nf3, Bd3, c3 (or b3 in the Colle-Zukertort), Nbd2 and O-O. Its main idea is to prepare the e3-e4 push. Edgard Colle won many brilliant attacking games with it in the 1920s.
Plans for White
White builds the setup, then plays e4 to open lines toward Black's king, often followed by e5 and a kingside attack with Qe2, Re1 and Ng5. The bishop on d3 and knight on f3 are the attacking pieces.
Plans for Black
Black challenges with ...c5 and ...Nc6, develops harmoniously with ...Bd6 or ...Be7, and tries to meet e4 with ...cxd4 and ...dxe4 so that the center does not close in White's favor.
Typical pawn structures
A solid pawn triangle d4-e3-c3 behind which White plays e4; after exchanges, isolated d-pawns can arise for either side.
Who it suits
Players who like simple, repeatable systems with clear attacking plans.
Common traps
Classic Greek gift motifs (Bxh7+, Ng5+, Qh5) decide many games against careless kingside castling. Black should keep a knight on f6 or play ...h6 when needed.
