Catalan Opening

ECO E00 · 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. g3

The Catalan Opening, 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g3, combines the Queen's Gambit with a kingside fianchetto. The bishop on g2 pressures the long diagonal toward Black's queenside, and the opening has been a favorite of world champions from Kramnik to Carlsen.

Plans for White

White often gives up the c4 pawn temporarily, relying on long-diagonal pressure to regain it. Plans include Qc2 or Qa4+, Ne5, a4 to undermine ...b5, and pressure on c6 and b7.

Plans for Black

Black can take on c4 and hold it with ...b5 or ...a6 (Open Catalan), or keep the center with ...Be7 and ...c6 (Closed Catalan), aiming for ...c5 or ...e5.

Typical pawn structures

Queen's Gambit structures with a fianchettoed bishop; often a queenside majority for Black after ...dxc4 against White's central pawns.

Who it suits

Positional players who like long-term pressure and small, lasting advantages, and who are comfortable sacrificing a pawn temporarily for initiative.

Common traps

Black's c8 bishop and a8 rook can get stuck on the long diagonal if Black is careless.
