The Classical Caro-Kann, 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Bf5, develops the bishop with tempo against the knight. It is one of the most solid openings in chess and has been trusted by world champions such as Karpov.

Plans for White

White plays 5.Ng3 Bg6 6.h4 h6 7.Nf3 Nd7 8.h5 Bh7 9.Bd3 to exchange the bishop and gain kingside space, then usually castles queenside after Bd2 and Qe2 or Qd3. The extra space and the h5 pawn are long-term assets.

Plans for Black

Black follows with ...Bg6, ...h6, ...Nd7, ...Ngf6, ...e6 and ...Be7 or ...Qc7, castling on either side. The pawn breaks ...c5 and ...e5 free the position.

Typical pawn structures

White's d4 pawn against Black's c6 and e6, with the d-file and a kingside space edge for White.

Who it suits

Solid players who like sound structures, slow maneuvering and endgames.

Common traps

The smothered mate 5.Qe2 Ngf6?? 6.Nd6# in the related ...Nd7 lines is a classic warning; Black must also watch Nf5 and Ne5 jumps and h4-h5 trapping the bishop.
