Bishop's Opening

ECO C23 · 1. e4 e5 2. Bc4

The Bishop's Opening, 1.e4 e5 2.Bc4, develops the bishop to its most active diagonal before committing the knight. It was popular in the 19th century and has been revived as a flexible way to reach Italian or Vienna positions.

Plans for White

White often plays d3, Nf3 and c3 for an Italian-style setup, or Nc3 and f4 for a Vienna-style attack. The early bishop keeps an eye on f7 and allows the f-pawn to stay free.

Plans for Black

The most popular reply is 2...Nf6, attacking e4 and preparing ...d5. Black can also play 2...Bc5 for symmetry or ...c6 and ...d5 for a broad center.

Typical pawn structures

Usually e4/e5 structures; after d3 and c3 a closed Giuoco Pianissimo-like structure appears, while lines with f4 open the f-file in Vienna or King's Gambit style.

Who it suits

Players who want to sidestep the main Petrov lines and like flexible transpositions.

Common traps

The Urusov Gambit (2...Nf6 3.d4) gives White fast development; Black should develop and avoid greedy queen moves.
