Bird Opening

ECO A02 · 1. f4

Bird's Opening, 1.f4, controls e5 and prepares a kingside setup reminiscent of the Dutch Defense with colors reversed. It is named after the 19th-century English player Henry Bird.

Plans for White

White typically plays Nf3, e3, b3 and Bb2, focusing on the e5 square and the long diagonal, or g3 and Bg2 in a Leningrad-style setup. A kingside attack with Qe1-h4 is a classic plan.

Plans for Black

Black can play solidly with ...d5, ...Nf6, ...g6, or strike with the From Gambit (1...e5), which aims for a quick attack on White's kingside.

Typical pawn structures

Reversed Dutch structures: a Stonewall with d4/e3/f4 or a Leningrad with g3 and d3.

Who it suits

Players who want an offbeat but sound opening with attacking chances, and who are comfortable with a slightly loosened king. It is also a good way to play the Dutch structures as White.

Common traps

From's Gambit trap: 1.f4 e5 2.fxe5 d6 3.exd6 Bxd6 4.Nc3? Qh4+ 5.g3 Qxg3+ 6.hxg3 Bxg3#. White should play 4.Nf3 to stop ...Qh4+.
